ROLE PROFILE SUMMARY:
The sow unit assistant manager is responsible for assisting the sow unit manager and overseeing the daily tasks of employees. This position involves working in an agricultural environment with hands-on interaction with livestock, regular structured routines and administrative duties, and extensive employee development and oversight.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assist manager with oversight of employees to ensure that all daily responsibilities/tasks are performed.
• Assist manager with employee management, problem solving and administrative duties (i.e. production record keeping, handling employee concerns/problems, etc.)
• Assist manager with ensuring repairs and maintenance are done timely.
• Assist manager in coordinating overall animal flow and understanding its effect on production.
• Assist manager with employee evaluations and disciplinary actions
• Assist manager with the coordination and training for current staff and new hires.
• Perform farrowing and/or gestation duties required
• Move, vaccinate and wean livestock
• Complies with all company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS).
• Performs special projects and other tasks as assigned by senior management.
• Performs all other activities and responsibilities as defined by farm owners.
• Ensure safety compliance at all sites.
• Follow all safety rules and practices and encourage employees to do the same
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
• High School diploma
• A minimum of 3 years sow experience, preferably in lead position
REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:
• Requires exemplary leadership, production, problem-solving and communication skills
• Requires dedication, goal-oriented, motivation, positive attitude and ability to effectively lead a team
• Basic computer, data entry and data analytical skills are required.
• Knowledge and enforcement of the latest industry biosecurity best practices must be observed and enforced throughout the site.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record
Respect and care for all animals is required. The ideal candidate must also possess experience in creating a culture of respect and care for all animals throughout the farm system. Knowledge and enforcement of the latest industry biosecurity best practices must be observed and enforced throughout the farm operation. This includes daily showering in and out of facilities where animals are housed.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• Ability to work in noise levels that may require hearing protection
• Ability to stand, sit, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch for extended periods of time on varied surfaces
• Ability to reach with hands and arms, perform repetitive motions, climb over 4-foot gates
• Ability to manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation or assistance from another team member.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Ability to work in a highly interruptive environment
• Must be capable of being on their feet for 10 hours
• Must possess ambulatory skills sufficient to move throughout the farm
• Must possess good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp
• Willingness to travel on occasion
